SanusBio Farms
Research animal quality
Specific pathogen-free (SPF) status means animals are managed to exclude defined pathogens that could interfere with research outcomes. Below is how SanusBio Farms approaches quality control.
Pathogen exclusion
SPF ferrets are raised in environments specifically designed to prevent pathogen exposure. Facilities implement employee training and certification, visitor access controls, quarantine measures, hygiene protocols, pest management, animal care standards, and breeding practices to minimize the risk of exposure to common pathogens.
Health monitoring
Regular testing is conducted to ensure the absence of specified pathogens. This includes serological tests for past infections, PCR for detecting genetic material of pathogens, and microbial cultures.
Housing and care
Ferrets are housed in facilities with strict biosecurity measures, including HEPA-filtered air systems to prevent airborne contamination, strict quarantine protocols for new introductions, and staff use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent human-to-ferret transmission.
Genetic quality
Animals have a known, documented genetic background. We can provide unrelated or closely related animals. Pedigrees for shipments are available on request. Lower bound Coefficient of Inbreeding and Coefficient of Relationship are available on request.
Behavioral and physiological health
Ferrets display typical behavioral patterns and receive stimulation and opportunities for social interaction. Their physical health is monitored, including for common conditions such as adrenal disease and insulinoma.
Documentation and certification
We maintain comprehensive quality records, including a detailed database documenting each ferret’s life. Expert veterinary care ensures thorough documentation. Lab results come from certified laboratories or our in-house team of certified laboratory technicians. Health reports encompass vaccinations, examination findings, treatments, and testing results.
Research suitability and human acclimation
Experienced staff help researchers select suitable animals for their study design. Ferrets are accustomed to human interaction, allowing for easier handling of both intricate and routine tasks.
